UK companies launch satellite with innovative new antenna

UK SME, Oxford Space Systems, has deployed its inaugural Wrapped Rib Antenna in space.

Oxford Space Systems (OSS) and Surrey Satellite Technology (SSTL) announced the successful launch of the CarbSAR IOD (carbonite, synthetic aperture radar, in-orbit demonstration) satellite on 12 January.

The launch of the satellite is a key milestone for the companies, as it is intended to deliver “high-resolution X-band SAR imagery” for UK defence, combining SSTL’s satellite with OSS’ compact stowage-efficient Wrapped Rib Antenna, OSS said.

This marks the first time Oxford-based OSS – a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) – has deployed its innovative foldable antenna in space, after many years of testing.

The effort is the culmination of investments in advanced manufacturing, especially regarding the antenna, which is made of a composite metal-mesh structure, developed at OSS’ facilities.

The launch also “demonstrates the maturity of our innovative deployable antenna product and strength of Oxford Space Systems in designing, manufacturing, and industrialising world-leading space technology”, Sean Sutcliffe, Chief Executive of OSS, said.

Sutcliffe added that the company is “well-positioned” to accelerate the production of antennas for future missions.

Funding for the project was provided by the two companies, alongside Airbus Defence, the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF), and the UK’s Defence and Security Accelerator and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory – which are part of UK Defence Innovation.

The NSSIF – an initiative by the ‘British Business Bank’ – funds dual-use technologies, with DSEI Gateway reporting on the multi-sector applicability of OSS and SSTL innovations last year.

The UK Space Agency are also providing ongoing support for the project as it seeks to fulfil its mission.
