Commodore Peter Olive joined the Royal Navy in 1989. He spent his early career at sea in a variety of roles including operations in the Gulf, Sierra Leone and with NATO. Peter commanded the minehunter HMS LEDBURY during the opening stages of Operation TELIC, and from 2008 to 2010 the Type 23 frigate HMS ARGYLL conducting operations to protect UK waters from a resurgent Russia. Peter has undertaken a variety of command and staff roles in maritime, Joint and multinational organisations. He was the MOD’s lead officer for the Defence contribution to the 2012 Olympics, and authored Defence strategies for the Indo-Pacific. From 2012 to 2014 he was Chief of Staff to the European Union’s counter-piracy mission ATALANTA.  He joined the Standing Joint Force Headquarters (SJFHQ) in 2016 as Assistant Chief of Staff Operations, before deploying to the Indo-Pacific in 2018 in command of a US capacity building mission. Peter returned to SJFHQ as Chief of Staff in 2019, participating in operations to support COVID-19 responses in the UK Overseas Territories as well as a major Joint Expeditionary Force exercise in Sweden. He joined the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre as Head Futures in 2021, where his responsibilities include delivery of the Global Strategic Trends (GST) programme.
