Colonel Sharples commissioned into the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in 1992. Early service was spent in the UK and Germany and on operations in the Balkans, Cyprus, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has completed capability, support and training focussed staff appointments in the MOD, Army Headquarters and two Defence training colleges. He became Chief Engineer (Army) in August 2019.
Colonel Sharples has a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Military Vehicle Technology. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in 1995.
