Major General Tom Bewick grew up in Devon, was educated at Churston Grammar School and studied naval architecture at University College London. He worked in industry as a naval architect before joining Sandhurst in 1996, commissioning into the Light Infantry.  Early Regimental Duty in Cyprus, Edinburgh and Germany included tours of Northern Ireland and Sierra Leone.

At staff he has served at the Permanent Joint Headquarters (2006-08), was the Military Assistant to the Assistant Chief of the General Staff (2015-16), as a Colonel he worked in the Finance and Military Capability Directorate of the Ministry of Defence (2016-2018) and as a Brigadier he was the Army’s Head of Strategy (2020-21). He attended the Army’s Intermediate Command and Staff Course (2005), the Advanced Command and Staff Course (2011), the Higher Command and Staff Course (2018) and the Royal College of Defence Studies (2022).

He was the Battalion Operations Officer for Operation TELIC 3 in Maysan, a Company Commander in 1 RIFLES for Operation HERRICK 9 in Garmsir, Chief of Staff 4 Mechanized Brigade for Operation HERRICK 12 (Task Force Helmand) and CO 4 RIFLES on Operation HERRICK 18, where the Battalion formed the Brigade Advisor Group supporting the Afghan National Army.  He commanded 7 Infantry Brigade (The Desert Rats) from 2018-2020 and took over as General Officer Commanding Army Recruiting and Initial Training Command in May 2022.
