Dr Gareth Appleby-Thomas
Head of the Centre for Defence Engineering, Cranfield University
Gareth’s background is in Physics and Astronomy (Durham) and Materials Science (Oxford). Following a D.Phil in Materials Science he joined Cranfield University in 2007. He became a Reader in 2018 / Head of the Centre for Defence Engineering (CDE) in 2019 and leads planning, implementation and management of H&S, personnel, teaching, research and strategy within the Centre. He further contributes to the management of the School as a Member of the CDS Executive team. He is research active, with 103 peer-reviewed articles to-date on Scopus, and specialise in investigation of the high strain-rate response of ballistic / armour relevant materials. He is the current Chair of the Shockwaves in Extreme Conditions (SWEC) group at the Institute of Physics (IoP) and works with a wide range of government, industrial and academic clients and collaborators. In particular, he has worked closely with AWE, Imperial College London, University College London, the Royal Military College (RMC) of Canada, the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA, Canberra), the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA, UK), the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), along with a number of other UK-based defence contractors including MBDA, BAE Systems and Dstl.
