Chief Scientific Advisor, UK Ministry of Defence

Angela is MOD’s most senior Science and Technology (S&T) Adviser. She provides strategic leadership for S&T in MOD, sets strategic direction for S&T in Defence and oversees more than £350m of annual research. A major focus of her work is engagement with our international partners and allies on S&T matters and she works closely with industry and academia to access the full range of innovative S&T.

Angela studied mathematics at Somerville College (University of Oxford) and earned a PhD in biomathematics from Imperial College London. In 1990, Angela became a Royal Society Research Fellow at Oxford University, and later a Research Fellow at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. In 1994, she returned to the UK to establish Mathematical Biology at the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council’s Institute for Animal Health.

Angela is currently at the University of Oxford and Professor of Mathematical Biology in the Department of Zoology, a Fellow of All Souls College and Director of The Institute for Emerging Infections of Humans. Her research interests lie in the use of mathematical models to aid our understanding of the evolution and spread of infectious agents. She is also interested in the use of natural science evidence in formulating public policy and has co-developed the Oxford Martin School Restatements: an activity which restructures and presents the evidence underlying an issue of policy concern or controversy in a short, uncharged, intelligible form for non-technical audiences.

Angela is a recipient of the Gabor Medal and the Weldon Memorial Prize. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society and is Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. She has papers printed in Nature, the Lancet and the Proceedings of the Royal Society.
