Andy Mitchell is Deputy Director – Navy Capability Strategy for the Royal Navy and his role covers Force Development, to determine how the Navy will fight in the future, the implementation of the Navy’s transition to a system of systems approach to capability development and associated requirements management and the sponsorship of the Navy’s Digital & C5ISR, Support, Infrastructure, T3E and People capability development.

Prior to this Andy held the role of Deputy Director – Navy Capability Sponsor for three years, where he was responsible for sponsoring capability development of the Above Water Battlespace & Surface Fleet, Commando Force and the Fleet Air Arm. 

A graduate with a Mechanical Engineering Degree, Andy spent his early career as a Design Engineer working on projects in the nuclear, bulk handling & defence industries and becoming a Chartered Engineer. 

Andy was Strategy & Business Development Director at Babcock where he partnered with Rafael to win the Ground Based Air Defence Battlespace Management C4I contract for the Falkland Islands; leading of the Laser Direct Energy Weapon Capability Demonstrator Programme consortium bid primed by Babcock, including Raytheon, QinetiQ, Leonardo and BMT.  Andy went on to become Head of Production  – Delivery and Engineering at Babcock, responsible for the delivery aspects and the engineering aspects of Babcock’s Production facilities in Bristol and Leicester.  Highlights included delivery on time of the Dreadnought Boat 1 Weapon Launch Tube Modules, the world first modular build of multiple torpedo tubes integrated into part of the pressure hull not in a submarine build facility.
