Brigadier Adam Foden DSO MBE
Comd 20 Armoured Brigade Combat Team
Raised in Leicestershire, Brigadier Adam joined the Queen’s Royal Lancers in 2000. His early regimental career in Germany and the UK provided a range of operational exposure. He led the same main battle tank troop on peace support operations in Bosnia on Op PALATINE, and warfighting in Iraq on Op TELIC 1. He also had the opportunity to command a light role infantry platoon on Op BANNER in Northern Ireland. On the conversion of QRL to the reconnaissance role, these formative experiences were reinforced by deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan in armoured and light cavalry battlegroups.
A highlight of these operational commands was the chance to lead the Brigade Reconnaissance Force in Helmand in the Winter of 2012-13. Charged with targeting insurgent
networks and weapons caches, his squadron bought space for transition of authority to Afghan National Security Forces. He subsequently assumed command of The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeths’ Own) in 2019 and led them training as the Divisional Reconnaissance Battlegroup in the UK, US and Europe, as well as in response to Covid-19 across the Northwest. He assumed command of 20th Armoured Brigade Combat Team in June 2024.
His career on the staff has been spent in operational and strategic planning roles. For the former he has been the staff officer for overseas operations in the Land Operations Command and a Military Assistant at the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters. For the latter, he has worked on the Army’s structure in the Organisation Branch and in the Capability Plans team of the Finance and Military Capability Directorate of the Ministry of Defence. He assumed the role of Assistant Head of Strategy in the Army Headquarters in late 2021. This included leading the team mobilising the British Army in the face of ongoing challenges to Euro-Atlantic security.
He is a graduate of the Higher Command and Staff Course and holds a BA in History from the University of Leeds and an MA in Defence Studies from
