UK issues RFI for MILSATCOM innovations

Companies with innovations suited for GEO are sought.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is inviting industry to help shape the country's future military satellite communications (MILSATCOM), ensuring the network’s resilience and relevance into the 2040s.

According to a request for information (RFI) published on 24 October, companies with innovations that focus on “next-generation GEO [geostationary Earth orbit] satellite design and manufacturing” are sought.

Particularly in areas that address challenges in satellite design, manufacturing, and deployment, with a focus on: bus and payload design; satellite mass optimisation; manufacturing efficiencies; cost reduction; and cost-effectiveness.

Interested parties are required to submit their proposals by 7 November.

The UK military currently operates the Skynet 5 SATCOM capability, comprising four satellites in GEO. Skynet 6 is the future system, worth GBP6 billion, which aims to improve and sustain the military’s SATCOM capabilities into the 2040s and beyond.

The first satellite – 6A – is expected to launch next year, followed by a new Skynet 6 Enduring Capability (SKEC), the core of the military’s long-term future SATCOM capability.

However, the SKEC programme has suffered delays. Most notably linked to the Narrowband Satellite System (NSS) project, after Northrop Grumman – which was partnered with Airbus Defence and Space – withdrew from the competition following its review of the invitation to negotiate. This leaves Thales Alenia Space as the sole remaining contender for NSS, meaning the programme is likely to be altered. A preferred bidder for the contract was initially expected in the final quarter of 2024 according to a UK Parliamentary Committee’s report in January 2023.
