Spending will prioritise developing a new armoured infantry battalion and drone capabilities.

The Netherlands will spend EUR1.1 billion to establish a new armoured infantry battalion, acquire new drones, and improve its medical capabilities as part of efforts to bolster its land forces, the Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MoD) revealed in a 19 June announcement.

Of the EUR1.1 billion being allocated, EUR425 million will be invested in creating the new infantry battalion, complete with combat vehicles and air defence systems. Some of this will also go towards real estate and digitalisation, the MoD said.

In addition, EUR125 million will be spent on combat support systems such as attack drones, reconnaissance systems, and counter-drone capabilities.

The Netherlands will also invest EUR83 million to help extend operational deployments and improve operational support, such as the medical supply chain and transport.

Finally, the MoD said it will commit to creating a “larger and scalable armed force” that can contribute more to NATO. Under this, EUR80 million will go towards increasing personnel and training.

The remaining EUR420 million has been reserved for “currency adjustments, wage adjustments, and maintaining plans” the MoD said, ensuring no concessions are made on the quality or quantity of equipment at a later stage.

While the EUR1.1 billion figure was first announced in the Netherlands ‘Spring Memorandum’ – a progress report delivered by the country’s finance minister – the MoD has now revealed the specific spending plans attached to the sum.

“The threat from Russia and the unrest in the world are increasing. NATO is emphatically warning of a possible military conflict within a few years. To prevent this, the Netherlands is investing heavily in the armed forces”, the MoD said.

“The money is needed because European allies, including the Netherlands, must take more responsibility in the military field. In addition, it is important to deploy it faster and over a longer period”, the MoD added.
