The EDA seeks to develop a ‘Quantum Action Plan’ as part of the tender, among other things.
The European Defence Agency (EDA) has launched a EUR1.6 million tender to investigate and develop quantum technologies in defence, a 22 September tender notice from the EDA has revealed.
Having announced plans to launch the tender back in April, the EDA has now opened the tender under two lots which seek to develop a ‘Quantum Action Plan’ and support research and technology (R&T) projects in quantum defence, respectively.
Under the first lot, EUR600,000 has been earmarked to develop and implement a Quantum Action Plan for defence.
A single contractor is sought, although it will be developed with the support of experts and relevant stakeholders through studies, workshops, and collaborative projects, the EDA said, and will ideally engage industry, research organisations, and militaries, as well as any other interested parties.
The plan will help define a “realistic and achievable” level of ambition for quantum technology in European defence, the EDA added.
While the overall framework contract for this lot is expected to last four years, there are several subcontracts expected, with the first lasting no longer than six months, focused on defining the plan.
Objectives under this first contract include outlining the availability, development status, and associated supply chain of quantum technologies in Europe, as well as linking quantum technologies with defence applications.
Other objectives include engaging with stakeholders and experts and, ultimately, proposing a “consistent Action Plan” that lays out a roadmap for quantum defence projects.
The subsequent contracts under lot one are largely just a continuation of this first specific contract.
Meanwhile, the second lot in this tender, valued at EUR1 million, will involve launching quantum defence projects for foundational R&T and supporting existing studies. As with lot one, the maximum duration is 4 years.
Deadline for the receipt of tenders for both lots is 27 October.
