The CAVS programme also includes Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia, and Sweden.
The UK is joining the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme, it was confirmed at DSEI UK 2025, following the signing of a ‘Technical Arrangement’ earlier this year.
“I am...delighted to confirm that the UK will be joining the Common Armoured Vehicle System Technical Arrangement”, UK Minister of State for Defence Lord Vernon Coaker said in a keynote address at DSEI UK 2025 on 9 September.
Norway has also signed the Technical Arrangement to become a participating partner in the programme.
The CAVS programme, launched in 2019 with Finland and Latvia, is a multinational initiative partly led by Patria for the joint development and procurement of a modern armoured vehicle system, specifically Patria’s 6x6 armoured vehicle.
The aim of the CAVS programme is to develop an armoured vehicle that meets the shared requirements of participating countries, expanding military capabilities while also delivering cost benefits through joint procurement.
By signing the Technical Arrangement, the UK is now a participating partner in the CAVS programme. However, this does not commit them to procure vehicles.
To progress to the procurement phase, it must go through several hoops, including signing the research and development, framework, and life cycle management agreements – steps other countries such as Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia, and Sweden have already taken.
Notably earlier this year, Patria and Babcock signed a memorandum of understanding in January to offer the Patria 6x6 vehicle to the British Army. Under the agreement, Patria provide enhancements to its platform specific to the British Army’s requirements.
