This is the latest Danish initiative to support Ukrainian manufacturers.
Ukrainian defence companies will be allowed to establish production facilities in Denmark, under a new agreement between the two countries.
The agreement will give Denmark easier access to cutting-edge technologies, as it seeks to draw upon the technical and strategic insights provided by Ukrainian manufacturers.
A letter of intent regarding the initiative was initially signed by the Danish and Ukrainian ministers of defence during the NATO Summit in The Hague on 24 June. Five days later, the Danish Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced it had formalised the agreement, backed with EUR67 million in funding.
It follows a string of Danish efforts to support Ukraine, such as the so-called ‘Danish Model’, which directly funds Ukrainian industry as part of Denmark’s aid to the country.
“I am glad we took this step with Denmark… who has provided billions in security assistance to Ukraine and helped our defence industry grow with the Danish Model”, the Minister of Defence of Ukraine Rustem Umerov said in the announcement.
The Danish Ministry of Defence told DSEI Gateway that, as "the forthcoming projects are classified, we are not able to elaborate on potential systems or companies" at this time.
This agreement marks the first step in the ‘Build with Ukraine’ initiative, as new factories are established to support the Ukrainian war effort through joint production.
Commenting on the initiative on Telegram, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that “we will sign the agreements to begin exporting our technologies abroad by opening production lines in European countries and possibly beyond”.
In a separate dialogue, Zelenskyy said that the joint production of weapons on foreign soil would be “for us and them”, as he emphasised the centrality of Ukrainian defence to broader European security.
This article has been updated to include the response from the Danish Ministry of Defence.
