The quick integration of the technology in the Typhoon indicates BAE Systems is striving to become more agile.

BAE Systems is testing an AI-driven decision support tool in the Typhoon fighter aircraft from Swedish-startup Avioniq AB to optimise fighter pilot's understanding of the threat landscape.

Known as Rattlesnaq, the technology aims to create a “safe operational envelope for operators in the beyond visual range battlespace by pinpointing where aircraft can fly without coming within the range of enemy missiles”, Avioniq AB announced on 16 June.

Engineers from both companies are working together to integrate the capability onto the Typhoon, which has included several technical demonstrations on the Typhoon simulator.

BAE Systems’ Head of Typhoon Strategy Paul Smith emphasised that the technology has the potential to revolutionise pilots’ training and tactics.

“In the future battlespace, when threats are constantly changing, you need live on-the-edge situational awareness to enable pilots to operate effectively in even the most contested environments”.

Speaking about the partnership, Avioniq AB CEO Mikael Grev acknowledged the agility of BAE Systems in adopting and trialling the technology, given that his company pitched Rattlesnaq less than a year ago.

The Typhoon is undergoing extensive upgrades to ensure it remains operationally relevant. These include new sensors, such as a new radar, avionics, and weapon systems.

In the UK's Strategic Defence Review, published in June, the Typhoon was recognised as an integral element of the UK's integrated air and missile defence capability along with the F-35 aircraft.
