The Royal Navy and NATO allies have shown a strong commitment to utilising advanced capabilities like maritime autonomy, but moving from experimental programmes and trials to deployable capability will require overcoming key challenges. This session will explore what it will take to transition from concept to operational reality, focusing on the institutional, industrial, regulatory and policy changes needed to accelerate the adoption and integration of unmanned surface vessels within the Fleet. The discussion will address key issues including the need for a strong maritime industrial base that can scale production beyond prototypes, the integration of autonomy into doctrine and command structures, and the development of a technical workforce ready to take on mission-focused innovation.
