AI in the Royal Navy: how do we exploit integrated technologies to improve capabilities?

13 Sep 2023
Naval Forum
Technology Innovation
The RN’s CTO (Brigadier Jaimie Roylance RM) and CDIO (Dr Leon Douglas) will present a brief description of the RN’s AI Adoption Roadmap, including a summary of the deductions derived from the Roadmap work to-date. On completion, they will join a moderated panel discussion which will feature three high-profile representatives from a traditional Defence Prime, a non-traditional Prime and an AI SME and focus on the opportunities and challenges associated with delivery of the RN’s Roadmap. The experts will explore acquisition paradigms and agile commercial frameworks, military requirement-setting  for software-enabled capabilities, collaboration and experimentation, access to Defence data for AI model design and training, AI accreditation and assurance, trust and explicability, and other thorny and relevant topics. The session promises to provide an invaluable insight into the approach the RN is taking towards AI and convergent technologies, its prospects of rapid progress in the near term, and the opportunities on offer for the AI tech ecosystem to support this critical journey.
