Cluster munitions & other battlefield non-unitary munitions
Clarion Defence Ltd. has taken the decision to ban from display, publication, offer or marketing in any form, all munitions and references to them, that can loosely be described as Cluster Munitions. Although no international treaty bans this family of weapon systems, their use is increasingly coming under scrutiny by Non-Governmental Organisations and Society more generally as munitions that can present humanitarian risk after use.
Definitions applied by Clarion Defence Ltd.
Clarion Defence Ltd. will not allow the display or marketing of any munition that has a non-unitary warhead. It follows, therefore, that no cargo round of any sort containing sub-munitions, no sub-munitions themselves nor any form of landmine, including anti-personnel landmines, may be displayed:
Cluster Munition: A Cluster Munition or cargo round means an air-carried or ground launched dispenser that contains numerous sub-munitions each of which has an explosive content. Each Cluster Munition is designed to eject sub-munitions over a pre-defined target area; the dispersal pattern is dependent upon the Cluster Munition design, its dispense parameters and the characteristics of the sub-munitions. The above restrictions apply to all systems in this category, notwithstanding the capability of more modern sub-munitions to self-destruct or self-deactivate.
Runway Denial Weapons/Munitions: A Runway Denial Weapon/Munition means an air carried dispenser that contains numerous anti-personnel landmines and/or other munitions that may have delayed fuses and are designed to render a runway or other surfaces unusable.
Landmine/anti-personnel landmines A landmine means a munition designed to be placed under, on or near the ground or other surface area and to be exploded by the presence, proximity or contact of a person or a vehicle. An anti-personnel landmine means a landmine designed to be exploded by the presence, proximity or contact of a person and that will incapacitate, injure or kill one or more persons.
Remotely-Delivered Landmines: A remotely delivered landmine means a landmine not directly emplaced but delivered by artillery, missile, rocket, mortar or similar means, or dropped from an aircraft.
A munition means “A complete device charged with explosives, propellants, pyrotechnics, initiating composition, or nuclear, biological or chemical material for use in military operations, including demolitions.”
A sub-munition means “a munition that separates from a parent munition and is designed to detonate on, prior to, or immediately after impact.”
